Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions

What is the formula for calculating steel bar weight?+

Weight (kg/m) = D² ÷ 162, where D is the bar diameter in millimeters. This is the standard formula used across the Indian construction industry, derived from steel's density (7850 kg/m³) and the bar's circular cross-sectional area. For a 12mm bar: 12² ÷ 162 = 0.888 kg/m.

What are standard TMT bar diameters in India?+

Common sizes are 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, and 32mm, as per IS 1786. Standard bar length from manufacturers is typically 12 meters (though 11.7-12m is common due to cutting tolerances). 8mm and 10mm are common for stirrups/ties, 12-16mm for slab reinforcement, 16-25mm for columns and beams.

How do I calculate total steel weight for a construction project?+

Total weight = Σ(bar diameter formula × total length of each diameter used). This requires a bar bending schedule (BBS) listing every bar's diameter and cut length from structural drawings. This calculator handles individual bar weight calculations — for a full project you'd sum multiple entries using the multi-entry table mode.
