Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions
How is electricity bill calculated in India?+
Most states use telescopic (progressive) slab tariffs — units in each range are charged only at that slab's rate. The bill also includes fixed charges, fuel surcharges, electricity duty, and sometimes subsidies.
Which state has the cheapest electricity?+
It depends on consumption. Delhi offers free power up to 200 units/month with subsidy. Tamil Nadu gives first 100 units free. Karnataka's Gruha Jyothi provides up to 200 units free for eligible households.
What is telescopic slab billing?+
Telescopic means only the units falling within each slab are charged at that rate. For example, 350 units in Maharashtra: first 100 at ₹4.43, next 200 at ₹8.06, and remaining 50 at ₹9.38.
What is FPPCA surcharge?+
Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) is a variable surcharge per unit to recover changes in fuel costs. Maharashtra currently adds ₹0.80/unit.
Are these rates exact?+
Rates are indicative for FY 2025-26 based on SERC tariff orders. Actual bills may differ due to FAC revisions, meter type, time-of-day tariffs, and DISCOM-specific charges.
What is Gruha Jyothi in Karnataka?+
Gruha Jyothi provides up to 200 units of free electricity per month for eligible domestic consumers. If consumption exceeds 200 units, the full bill applies on all units.
How does Delhi free electricity work?+
Domestic consumers with subsidy get zero charges on energy for up to 200 units/month. Above 200 units, normal slab rates apply from the 201–400 band onwards.
What is electricity duty?+
A state tax on electricity consumption. Maharashtra charges 16%, Uttar Pradesh 5%, and Rajasthan 8% on energy charges plus fuel surcharge.
