Quick answers to common questions
Exchange rates are indicative reference rates from publicly available sources, updated periodically. They closely track real market rates but may differ slightly from bank rates (which add a margin of 1-3%) or credit card rates. For large transactions, always confirm rates with your bank or forex provider before transacting.
Banks and forex providers add a spread (profit margin) of 1-5% to interbank exchange rates. A rate of ₹83/USD interbank rate might become ₹80.5 (sell) at a bank. Online forex providers (Wise, Niyo Global, BookMyForex) offer rates closer to interbank. This calculator shows reference rates — actual transaction rates will vary.
Best to worst for travellers: (1) Multi-currency forex card loaded in India at good rates, (2) International debit cards with low forex markup (Niyo, HDFC Regalia), (3) ATM withdrawal abroad (better than exchange counters), (4) Airport exchange counters (worst rates, avoid), (5) Credit card (usually 2-4% forex markup).
