Quick answers to common questions
TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is tax collected by the payer before making payment. Under Section 194A, TDS is 10% on interest above ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for seniors). Section 194C covers contractor payments at 1% (individual) or 2% (company) after thresholds. Section 194J covers professional fees at 10% (2% for technical services). Section 194I covers rent at 10% (individual/HUF) or 2% (company) above ₹2.4 lakh per year.
Section 194I applies when annual rent exceeds ₹2,40,000. TDS is 10% for individual or HUF landlords and 2% when the payee is a company. No TDS applies on the exempt threshold amount.
TDS on salary under Section 192 is deducted at the applicable income tax slab rate. The employer calculates estimated annual salary, subtracts eligible deductions, and deducts TDS monthly based on projected tax liability for the year.
TDS deducted in excess of actual tax liability can be claimed as refund by filing your Income Tax Return (ITR). The refund is credited to your linked bank account after processing by the Income Tax Department, usually within 4–16 weeks.
